General and Family Dentistry is our practice here at Thornton Dental.

Our General dentists provide ongoing regular support of your oral health, ideally, every six months for routine checkup & cleaning. This is important not only for good oral hygiene but also for prevention and early detection of  more serious health issues like gum disease and oral cancer. Dental check-ups often include taking necessary x-rays for the dentist to give a thorough examination.

Here are some of the dental procedures that Thornton Dental can provide our patients:

  1. Composite fillings - restoration of lost tooth structure due to decay by using non-metal materials.
  2. Dental Sealant -  a thin coating painted on the chewing surface of the teeth, usually the back teeth to protect and shield the enamel of each tooth from decay.
  3. Crown - commonly called a cap, a crown is a permanent covering placed onto the existing tooth if the tooth is severely decayed, chipped, and/or broken.  Crowns are also commonly used after a root canal procedure to help strenghten the tooth. This can be made of metal, porcelain or both.
  4. Root Canal therapy - a treatment used to repair and save a badly decayed or infected tooth where the nerve of the tooth becomes infected or the pulp becomes damaged. During the procedure, the nerve and pulp is removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.
  5. Extraction -  the process of removing a tooth or tooth parts. This is normally done when a tooth can no longer be repaired or restored because the tooth is so far decayed or broken.
  6. Periodontal Root Planing and Scaling - also known as deep cleaning, this procedure is designed   to remove build-up plaque below the gum line.  Plaque accumulation tends to be thickest on the part of the tooth directly adjacent to the gums.  When this plaque hardens and turns into calculus, it cannot be eliminated by regular brushing & flossing hence the gums become irritated and swollen.
  7. Orthodontic Treatment - Orthodontic treatment is a way of straightening or moving teeth to improve the appearance of the teeth and how they work. This can be done with the use of brackets, wires and elastics commonly called braces or  with the use of a series of virtually invisible aligners known as Invisalign.
  8. Denture  - a removable  replacement for missing teeth. It can either be a partial or a complete denture. Complete or full dentures are used when all teeth are missing. Partial dentures are used     when some natural teeth remain.
  9. Fixed Bridge - also known as fix partial denture since it is not removable literally bridges the gap created by one or more missing teeth. The bridge is cemented to the abutment teeth on either side of the gap.
  10. Dental Bleaching also known as teeth whitening, is the process of lightening the teeth beyond its natural color using a chemical oxidizing agent using light to accelerate the process.
